What if, in addition to the
Edit button at the bottom of the page, we also had an
Append button? This would bring up an empty (signature-only) box. When the user finishes editing and does save, the text would be inserted at the end of the topic. Maybe a separator should be included as well.
This would make it easier to do discussions, in that it would automatically provide the signatures. It also eliminates the need to scroll down to the end of a lengthy topic in order to add something.
The downside might be that people will be more likely to just post stuff without first reading what's there, and may be less likely to refactor discussions when necessary.

I don't think the downsides count.
WikiWiki culture says that whenever a topic is suboptimal (uninformed blabla or topics that need refactoring) anybody who cares about that topic can rectify the situation. IOW if any of the downsides become unbearable, they will be fixed by somebody.
Another thing: It would be nice to subject the Add link to privileges just like the Edit link. This would allow me to have topics where I write something, and others can add comments etc., but they can't modify the original text. (That's a quite desirable form of collaboration in many cases.)

(I just noticed that something similar is requested in
BulletDiscussion. I'm not sure whether the two proposals are identical or just have a large overlap, so I'll leave the above in.)

New plugin - excellent
CommentPlugin allows to add text directly into page, without
[ Edit ]
mode.
Full disclosure: I am promoting it everywhere, hoping that it will became standard plugin.
