Minutes of Freetown Release Meeting, 2007-08-27

TOC and Agenda

Logistics, Participants, IRC log

1. WYSIWYG Editor Integration

  • Desired outcome: Agreement on WYSIWYG editor strategy

  • Crawford has raised a proposal to ReplaceKupuWithTinyMCE in 4.2.0.
    • We are several that believe that this is worth it as it adds significant kick-ass to the 4.2.0 release.
    • There is a good discussion going on ReplaceKupuWithTinyMCE on implementation details which should allow to run, but the decision to be made is really if we throw out Kupu and replace it with TinyMCE. Feature freeze or huge bug fix? This is a great chance to take advantage of the funding Crawford has received and get a huge improvement on what we have on the top of the priority on our TWikiRoadMap.
    • Note Crawford used up all the funding some time ago and is currently working unfunded.

Decision:

  • The Kupo editor will be replaced by the TinyMCE editor in 4.2.0 (with more bug fixing)
  • When TMCE is enabled the Edit button at top bar will be TMCE
  • The WYSIWYG at top and bottom is removed
  • The Edit at the bottom also enters TMCE mode.
  • A "Raw Edit" button is added next to "Raw View" which enters normal plain edit mode.

2. "Under the Radar" feature SimpleOperatorsInIF

  • Desired outcome: Decision on whether feature should be allowed

  • Deep in feature freeze, Crawford has added the allows, isweb and istopic operators to %IF. These are required to eliminate template dependencies on plugins, and have been requested many times.
  • Crawford considers the risk to be very low, as the changes are small and a full suite of unit tests is provided. The work is checked in, but can easily be reverted if the decision goes against.
    • Maybe we should just decide that this is a means to solve a bug related to template dependencies on plugins. -- KennethLavrsen

Decision: Accepted because it solves an issue and is contained within a very small "feature room".

3. Review Urgent Bugs

  • Desired outcome: Find owners to fix urgent bugs

  • We need feedback - far too many potential core bugs are sitting in "Waiting for Feedback" - either need feedback, or review and closure.
  • We have more than 20 urgent bugs open, but half already an owner working on them. We need some contributors to work on the remaining. See Bugs:ReleaseBlocker
  • We need an urgent review of Normal bugs in case any have been mis-prioritised by the submitter. Flip bugs to "Confirmed" when the priority has been confirmed.

4. Coordinate TWiki Release 4.2

  • Desired outcome: Decide on tentative dates for string freeze and other dates; identify and assign action items

  • Beta release:
    • Kenneth suggests a beta in one week.
  • Release Build:
    • SvenDowideit is looking to build a release package this week - either Alpha or Beta, depending on decision on the above.
    • SvenDowideit's nightly build has been running successfully for almost a week, no unit test failures during that time - 818 unit tests running.
    • Sven's not sure he'll be able to be at the meeting, 6am is frown
  • Earliest release date (can be delayed if too many bugs are open or tests fail):
    • ?
  • Must do before any release: Update release note (Kenneth will do), review one more time Bugs:TWiki.TWikiInstallation and Bugs:TWiki.TWikiUpgradeGuide. If people raise bugs Kenneth will fix.

Decision:

  • If Sven has the time we will propose a first beta to be built one week from now.
  • We have string freeze with the release of first beta
  • Antonio will arrange translators

5. Marketing meeting

  • RodBeckstrom proposes marketing meeting the Mondays we do not have release meeting at the same time:
  • First meeting 03 Sep 2007 - 20:00 GMT, 22:00 CEST, 01:00 PST

Action Items

  • Sven to build first beta
  • Antonio to engage translators
  • Kenneth to finish release notes
  • Rod to arrange marketing meeting
  • + bug fixing see above
