Feature Proposal: Get Rid Of Questionmark After Non-Existing Link

Users often use words that look like wiki words but are just meant to be acronyms or hip names for something. Then the "?" shows up that would allow them to create a link. That "?" is considered annoying by most users, where it is not meant to propose a potential link.

To make matters worse, in my experience, hardly ever are topics created by clicking on the "?". The users I know create topics by either typing the topic name in the address bar, or by clicking the "create a page" link.

Description and Documentation

I suggest to make it a configuration option whether the "?" appears after a wiki word for which no reference exists.

Note that this is different from the noautolink feature, as the links would still be linked if they exist.

Instead of AnUnwantedLink see this AnUnwantedLink.

As you stated, this needs to be configurable. Possibly with a new NOAUTOCREATELINK setting? By default it should be off since this is the organic wiki way of creating new topics, e.g. keep current behaviour.

Erm - this is solved, since MichaelDaum implemented it in r11772. There are configuration options for NEWLINKFORMAT and NEWLINKSYMBOL. See TWikiPreferences for the default value.

By the way: I rather often create topics by clicking on questions marks. I edit the parent topic first, deliberately pointing to a not yet existing topic. If I then create the new topic using the question mark, the topic parent is immediately correct.

Thomas. See CustomizableNewWikiWordLink.

I doubt you are right in your assumption that people do not use the wikiword ?-mark way to create topics. I do it all the time and I know many of our users do it all the time. I guess if a TWiki is mainly driven by a few twiki apps it may be different but on a general purpose TWiki people are using the feature.

I like the question mark too. I found it's one of the main driver for topic creation. In fact new users often find themselves clicking on the question mark - users are curious by nature smile - and before they even know it they have created a new topic and contributed to the web site.
