Junkbuster is a non-caching proxy server that can be used to filter out ads or any unwanted Web content. It is OpenSource and available for Windows, Linux, various Unixes, etc - it works quite well as long as you set the +downgrade option in the ijb.action file, to use HTTP/1.0 only (it doesn't implement HTTP/1.1 properly so you may also need to set your browser, see UrlCorruptionWithMozilla). It's particularly good if you are on a dialup link, or if you just hate banner ads, and the new version can also selectively get rid of annoying JavaScript such as that for pop-up windows.

Junkbuster has an option to show all the HTTP headers in both directions, making it very useful for debugging BrowserIssues and testing BrowserAndProxyCacheControl issues such as BackFromPreviewLosesText.

Be sure to download the latest beta from http://ijbswa.sourceforge.net as this is much improved over earlier releases, as of Jan 2002.

WARNING: Be sure to review and edit the re_filterfile.txt - the default config replaces text (e.g. Microsoft) and JavaScript; by default, a number of sites and intranet apps were broken by Junkbuster's aggressive JavaScript hacking, which doesn't always work. Alternatively, add such sites to the {-filter} section of ijb.action, like so:

{-filter}
