We added some translations to http://publicooperation.com/cgi-bin/view/Fr , which my wife did for a health orgnanization in Conakry, Guinea (Country is missing in TWikiRegistration, just like Burkina Faso!). We also added some pages, which we found on Indymedia, France (we couldn't identify the author of those, sorry).

  • all templates (including all the oops-messages)
  • all pages of the _default web
  • some manual pages of the TWiki web

With that, it should be possible now, to set up a TWiki for french users, with all the most important items in french. We have already implemented it for our users in Conakry.

The translation needs of course cross-reading, and an adaption to the DakarRelease. But we hope, that there is a good basis now, and others will be encouraged to join.

I'll reupload this material to http://www.fgranger.com/cgi-bin/view/Frcairo soon -- FrancoisGranger - 03 Jan 2006

Is there a place where all the files can be downloaded, perhaps in TAR or ZIP format? I'd like to try these translations out on a bilingual site that I am involved with.

-- IngoPeters - 21 Jan 2005

We integrated them as single pages into the infrastructure of PublicC - hoping someone would do some proof-reading. However, PublicC doesn't really seem to be active - looks more like a testing platform.

Anyway, we are about to finish adapting the files for the current TWiki release ( CairoRelease ). Since PublicC is not responding to our request, to provide some space for the new files, we might just attach them here as tar/zip - unless of course someone has a better idea.

BTW: we are simply replacing the english files in our installation script (not very nice - just quick) since we didn't have the need for a bilingual site.

Is this adapation to Cairo finished and/or available ? If it is not, is there a collective work space where we can help ?

-- BenVoui - 14 Apr 2005

We have finished adapting our previous french translations to the CairoRelease, and succesfully installed them on our project-server. Please find the respective files as attachments to this topic.

We just went straight ahead and translated anything that we found useful for our project, and tried to integrate pages from other sites (e.g. IndyMedia), where we could. In the attachment you'll find:

  • all templates (including all the oops-messages) for the three standard skins.
  • all pages of the _default web (we just took the ones from the previous release)
  • some manual pages of the TWiki web

Simply copy the pages into the respective directories of your TWiki.

This is far from being a complete french localization. Especially the approach is moere or less brute-force. There are other localizations done in a more elegant way - we simply wanted our site up and running. But maybe this can spark off other efforts, once there are some french sites alive.

If you have corrections to do, feel free to continue with what is there. FrancoisGranger has provided a Web on his new TWiki, which can be set up as a french localization project. Someone has to do the next step smile

EN: Where are the latest fr.pot and fr.po files ? Can't see them at http://svn.twiki.org/svn/twiki/branches/DEVELOP/locale/ and can't find them on any web. Please attach the files to this wiki as indicated above.

-- FabianRodriguez - 22 Dec 2005

I think the latest publicly available fr.po is in /tools/pkg/debian/po/fr.po. But I think it's not going to help you much, unfortunately :-/.

For what it's worth, I found KBabel very helpful in doing the translation, if you're in an X environment, you might find it helpful as well.

-- SteffenPoulsen - 24 Dec 2005

/tools/pkg/debian/po/fr.po has nothing to do with this, that is the translation of the installation dialogs for the Debian package. There is no fr.po for TWiki itself in the repository yet.

  • Whoops - you're rigt, sorry for providing misleading information. -- SteffenPoulsen - 25 Dec 2005

-- AntonioTerceiro - 24 Dec 2005

I've not my draft translation available right now, but I'll finish it and upload it before the end of the year, as soon as I am online. When is Dakar supposed to be released ?

-- BenVoui - 24 Dec 2005

Most of the people want to release yet in this year.

-- AntonioTerceiro - 24 Dec 2005

Here is the fr.po file, in sync with DEVELOP TWiki.pot r8022.

-- BenVoui - 28 Dec 2005

Added french translation on r8028. Thank you.

-- AntonioTerceiro - 29 Dec 2005

Wishing all a HNY 2006. I just added a comment box to this page, also created FrenchTranslation as an easier, faster way to find the information for non-french speaking users. I'd like to suggest to link to FrenchTranslation from other pages instead of this one, if possible, for convenience.

-- FabianRodriguez - 02 Jan 2006

Updated some info on this page. The previous TWiki setups have been removed. I have a backup of everything which was done on them. Do we need a central testing copy of the current translation ? I'll reinstall all available material already translated real soon on http://www.fgranger.com/cgi-bin/view/Fr. Feel free to help transalting and proof reading. -- FrancoisGranger - 03 Jan 2006
