"What New TWiki users said"

In ModerateYourNavelGazing PeterNixon said:

"What I want to see more of is a focus on defining new features that will gain TWiki more immediate acceptance with minimal cognitive investment on the user's part, without sacrificing or limiting the huge potential of TWiki, and more focus on how to implement those features." [.....] "This requires a serious commitment by the idea contributors and the code developers to congeal and prioritize an ultimate feature list, along with a rash of UsabilityStudies? from users (or potential users) who have minimal exposure to TWiki."

This page aims at collecting some new user remarks from TWiki admins.

Dutch engineers & researchers #1

Environment:

I just organised a workshop for 8 colleagues to 'teach them TWiki' in one hour. Explained the basics and then just let them convert a Word doc:

  • 4 pages text
  • 4 embedded pictures in .wmf
  • numbered and unnumbered lists
  • 3 heading levels, etc.
to a TWiki Sandbox topic. And then let them talk freely about the software.

Most interesting remarks:

  1. It's perfectly possible to learn basic TWiki use in one hour.
(I stressed the 'use it like e-mail' adagium in the workshop)
  2. Uploading more than one attachment is too cumbersome. Why can't I upload all attachments at once?
  3. Inserting images in the right place is too much work.
  4. Inserting images embedded in a Word doc is way too much work.
(I use Word -> IrfanView -> save as png -> attach to TWiki -> insert in right place)
  5. Why does the picture comment look like plain text and not like a caption?
  6. Why don't my exclamation marks show?
(See ExclamationMarkInTitle - the point is that it's unexpected behaviour)
  7. How can I be sure that the topic hasn't been edited by anyone without the proper knowledge on the subject?
(Interestingly, I pulled the demo doc off our LiveLink server - on which you can only see the list of editors, not the changes they made)
  8. How easy is it to get the TWiki content into MS Word?
(People recycle common paragraphs in reports, so storing them collectively on TWiki would be very useful IF TWiki -> Word is easy)
  9. Why can't I select multiple values in the drop-down menus (in the TWikiForm)?
(See MultipleSelectForSettingForms. Many of our topics are hard to classify in exactly one category)
