Can people have a look at the updated docs for the WebNotify
feature, in Codev.WebNotify
is now implemented but everyone seems to be copying the other entries, of course - maybe if a few TWikiers delete their email addresses from WebNotify
it would be a bit more obvious

Any comments on the documentation for this new feature, at top of Codev.WebNotify
? If not, I shall finalise this and replicate into other webs and the TWiki beta, at which point it will be rather a pain to make changes...

On the assumption that this new behavior is "preferred" (and the old behavior is deprecated or "not documented") I think the point of view of the note should be changed. (I attempted this a few minutes ago, then Mozilla crashed before I saved anything and I want to "walk away" for a little bit before I make another attempt. Of course, if you tell me my assumption is wrong, or if you make the change yourself, I won't bother.
Darn Mozilla -- pretty good for many things, but I experience crashes when I have a lot of windows / tabs open (and I keep a lot open -- on the order of 14 windows with 1 to 15 tabs on each window) -- I keep meaning to get a count, but I have to the the count before the crash -- maybe I'll just sit here one day and open windows / tabs until I get the crash.
- if yer on ms-windows it might have to with amount of ram available. keep task manager open and monitor mem usage. might help, might not. -- MattWilkie Thanks Matt -- I do use that approach for similar problems on Windows, but I use Mozilla on Linux -- it's part of my "migrate to Linux" project. -- RandyKramer

Ok, another attempt -- I blockquoted the note (several paragraphs) from the WebNotify
page and am modifying it here:
Doesn't seem as good as my first (lost) attempt but how do I really know (I included more notes the first time -- like:
- This is a draft -- feel free to revise, edit, polish, etc. or ignore
- This is based on the premise that the new approach is preferred in some sense -- if that premise is incorrect, this needs to be revised accordingly.
- Three more notes that I can't recall -- maybe no longer relevant -- oh, yes -- my first approach had all the text on the WebNotify page and suggested that it could be split into two parts, with the details on a linked page. Of course, this can swing back the other way (all on the WebNotify page).
WebNotify is a subscription service
to be automatically notified by email when topics change in the TWiki.Codev web. This is a convenient service, so you do not have to come back and check all the time if something has changed. To subscribe to the service, please put yourself on the list below. The format is:
3 spaces * Main.yourWikiName For example, here are some entries for a user and a group:
Note: This is a change with the Beijing release of TWiki -- the requirement used to be
3 spaces * Main.yourWikiName - yourEmailAddress In order for the new approach to work, you must have one or more valid email addresses on your TWiki home page (Main.guest). See WebNotifyChange -- unless you have a reason to do otherwise, we suggest that you change your entry to the new format.
Then, on WebNotifyChange (or some better title):
TWiki now supports WebNotify entries that include only the user's WikiName, or the WikiName of a TWiki user group - there is no need to include the email address of each user, as TWiki's
mailnotify script now picks this up from the user's home page. Multiple email addresses per home page are supported and will all be notified - if for some reason you don't want the email sent to the addresses on your home page, you can specify an email address on WebNotify using the old format:
3 spaces * Main.yourWikiName - yourEmailAddress For example:
* Main.FredBloggs - fbloggs@his_isp.com
Note that with the old approach you cannot specify a group.
Don't know if we explicitly need to state (here or on the WebNotify page): All members of a user group must have one or more valid email addresses on their home pages.
This simplifies email address updates when a user is in many WebNotify pages, as well as allowing use of TWiki user groups to notify a whole group with one entry. [You can try this right now on TWiki.org WebNotify pages, or on your own TWiki by testing out the TWikiAlphaRelease.]

PS: I'm half tempted to delete all the email addresses from the WebNotify
pages when I delete my own -- I wonder how many people would really object (or have a problem?) Guess I won't do it immediately. I know Peter often subscribes under several addressses -- before I do anything that drastic I should check his home page, at least (don't know how many others do anything like that). Or maybe a note to this effect should be added to the note above -- that is something like: "unless you have a reason to do otherwise, we suggest that you change your entry to the new format" (now added).
