Feature Proposal: Wizard like way to become first user and admin

Motivation

Ease the way you install TWiki

Description and Documentation

This proposal is triggered by me not feeling comfortable with the new way of becoming admin user. I am not saying we should remove the sudo feature. The feature in itself is fine seen as a technical feature and gives new possibilities like becoming admin temporarily - also under normal user long after installation and initial learning phase is over.

I think the path from deciding to install TWiki for the first time, and till you have become an administrator has a few usability issues.

And one of them is the step you need to take to add yourself to the TWikiAdminGroup.

It was also too difficult before the sudo login.

The problem is that the newbie is not properly guided through the steps. He will have to find his way by searching around and reading the installation doc which is a pretty complicated document now.

So what I am saying is that between now and TWiki 5.0 we need to observe carefully the user reactions to the sudo and try and make a UI design that guides the new admin through the steps instead of adding more and more documentation.

This does not mean letting go of the sudo login as a feature.

So I would to revisit the configure wizard approach. Not my original proposal because it did not get support, but a new one where configure gets a few more wizard like steps that takes you through the steps of setting the configure password followed by a step initiated from configure to register yourself - and add yourself to the TWikiAdminGroup. And since you started already from configure and have set the configure password, you can already be in the sudo login mode at this time.

A bit like most Linux installers do. The installer wizard in Fedora/Redhat asks you to give a root password and it wizards on and ask you to define the first ordinary user.

I have some ideas how to add this in configure and I will need you people like Sven and Arthur to help with how implement this. Because users can be handled so many ways it is not a simple thing and requires some scenarios to be made and discarded before we find the best way.

I will add more to this proposal when 4.2 is shipped. There is not enough description of what I want to start discussion. But you can start thinking about it.

Discussion

I seriously think you can remove sudo from this topic. It has nothing to do with it. Sudo was inspired by the TWikiAdminGroup issue, but is much more.

Configure, and its conversion from settings to wizard, is something that has been desired, asked for and discussed ever since Crawford took the initiative. We're busy on other things, and waiting for someone to do it.

I think an installation wizard is a fine idea. I already tried to move in this direction by hiding the EXPERT configure options. If you need any advice on how configure works, don't hesitate to ask.

This is a good idea and in line with the release focus of IstanbulRelease. Anyone interested in driving this? Please propose spec on top.
