Some customizations I've bee working with:

ExpandVariablesInNewUserTemplate

This totally works! THANKS, Peter. I wanted something like that but didn't even look for it until today.

GnuSkin

To take advantage of Send a link to this page, Find the following in ./templates/twiki.gnu.tmpl:

%TMPL:P{"topbar_start"}%
And insert the following on the next line to place an icon and link to the left of "edit".
<img src="%PUBURLPATH%/%TWIKIWEB%/GnuSkin/groupwise16.png" align=middle border=0 width=24 height=24 alt="#">&nbsp;</a>%MAILTHISTOPIC%
I just copied the "edit" line and dinked with it 'til it worked. I'm obviously using an icon I made myself.

My users like GnuSkin. Too late to go back now.

c'mon, someone answer this--

It works, so I'm not complaining, but why??

I loaded TWikiRegistration and copied the source from my trusty web-browser. Pasted that into register.html in my static home directory. It registers people and I don't know why. If my "view" script is authenticated.. Everything is authenticated... how does this html form register BammBamm?
