Feedback on GenerateSearchPlugin

-- ThomasWeigert - 25 Feb 2005

Thanks Thomas for contributing this Plugin. That was quick, from the idea in ControlsPluginDev to the implementation smile

  1. The 40 fields limitation is probably attributed to the form's method="post" vs method="get" attribute.
  2. How about publishing the PluginBenchmarks?

-- PeterThoeny - 25 Feb 2005

Your tip of "POST" was right on the money. I changed the method and everythings works fine. I updated the plugin. Thanks for your help.

-- ThomasWeigert - 25 Feb 2005

Installing this without ControlsPlugin gave an error about ControlsPlugin not being there, and installing ControlsPlugin fixed it. I think the GenerateSearchPlugin topic should list ControlsPlugin as a dependency. Cheers.

-- MarcusLeonard - 24 Mar 2005

Marcus, thanks. I have updated the plugin by removing this false dependency. I had originally reused some of the ControlsPlugin but decided not to in the end, yet omitted to delete the dependency. I have improved my release process.

-- ThomasWeigert - 24 Mar 2005

The examples confused me a bit. Couldn't really get a search to work like in the example.

-- ErezZukerman - 04 Apr 2005

Erez, if you can describe what you are trying to do, I'll help you to get started.

Updated with additional features...

Hi Thomas, I very much like your plugin. I'd like to use it in a knowledgebase setting to filter predefined (sets of) keywords with which the topics have been classified.

This is difficult with the current implementation because the current implementation doesn't seem to include the topic name in the table (which would actually be the main result of the 'search'. The topic name isn't in my WebForm. Would it be a good idea to always present the checkbox 'topicname' in the list of checkboxes (or set this behaviour as a preference)?

Also, it would be very neat if the list of fields to be filtered/shown could be set in a seperate page so that the page that actually includes the filtered search only shows the table. I.e.:

  • Admin selects the fields to be displayed/filtered on
  • User immediately sees the search table and is not bothered by the select checkboxes

This plugin might provide a kind of FacetedNavigation...

added .zip to CVS

I agree with JosMaccabiani. We are starting to roll out a custom SOP application and one of the users feedback was exactly his comment. They would like to have a predefined list of what to show and then they could change the query without having to go through the two step process. Otherwise I think this is a great plugin.

-- RickMach - 15 Dec 2005

I changed the SHORTDESCRIPTION and DEBUG setting. Should be rolled back into the Plugin.

-- PeterThoeny - 15 Dec 2005

I've modified this plugin, to update it to Dakar, and to add a few new attributes - I'll publish it soonish. Jos and Rick - the parameters i've added will be of interest to you - filter="" and show="" in which you can list the default form elements to show or filter by, and inline="on" where the results table is inline in the topic, rather than on a new page.

-- SvenDowideit - 24 Feb 2006

Please consider upgrading this Plugin so that it runs on Cairo and Dakar codebase as described in HandlingCairoDakarPluginDifferences.

-- PeterThoeny - 24 Feb 2006

Thanks for the added parameters. When do you expect to post the updated version? Do you need a beta tester for Dakar? This plugin is currently broken when we upgrade (happening this weekend) so a beta is better than a broken plugin ;-).

-- RickMach - 25 May 2006

Ported to Dakar. Added an option to run the query using FormQueryPlugin.
