Mediawiki Wiki Syntax Summary

This topic provides online help for users who activated the MediaWiki syntax in their user homepage with a EDITSYNTAX = Mediawiki setting. Syntax conversion is provided by the EditSyntaxPlugin.

Keeping this help text short and simple is important since this page is aimed at new users. It does include pop-up links for more detailed help.


Formatting help:

  • bold put word/phrase in three single quotes: '''your phrase'''
  • bullet list start line with one or more asterisks and a space: ** your text
  • headings put text in 1 to 6 equal signs: ==Your Heading==
  • italic put word/phrase in two single quotes: ''your words''
  • internal links use topic name or [[link|label]] rule: WebHome, or [[WebHome|home]]
  • external links use URL or [url label] rule: http://yahoo.com, or [http://yahoo.com/ link to Yahoo]
  • monospaced use HTML: <tt>your words</tt>
  • paragraphs separate with blank line
  • More formatting help and hints on good style
