Browser Anomalies with the Pattern Skin

The Pattern Skin causes anomalies in konqueror, and may cause others in other browsers.

Note: Some browsers have problems rendering CSS. Check PatternSkin to see what browsers are supported.

Internet Explorer

Version 5.0

The LowRes.css modification (to put the sidebar on the right) does not work properly — instead, the sidebar overwrites the text (content) of the page.

Explorer 5.0 is not supported.

Konqueror

Version 3.2.0 (Mandrake 10)

  • The mdash entity (—) shows up as a (hollow) box.
  • The bullet in the TOC shows up as a down arrow.
  • The text headings in the TOC shift far to the right (appear to disappear) when "moused over".

Note: The last item (TOC text shifting to the far right on mouseover) occurs with the bar on the left but not with the bar on the right.

  • Why is The bullet in the TOC shows up as a down arrow files as a bug? It is the design. Oops, sorry. But then it is a bug in IE 5.0, as they show up as bullets there (solid circles at one level, hollow circles at the next).
  • &mdash if not used in templates. Does the problem occur with normal dashes too? Testing:

shows up as a hollow box, _oops, now it doesn't, maybe something in the LowRes.css fixed it? Apparently so — with LowREs.css shows up fine, without, it shows up as a hollow box. In either case, &mdash (without the ";") shows up as text (&mdash). Dash and double dash show up as expected.

I give up (almost) — now (with LowRes.css sometimes the — shows up properly and sometimes as a hollow box. In the above, the first one (before the previous paragraph showed as a hollow box. Within the next paragraph, both the one within = = and the one without showed up properly. ???? Oops, I guess I was wrong there too -- it looks like with the = = it shows up properly, and without it shows up as a hollow box (with LowRes.css). But, now I'm back to having the TOC text shift to the far right when being moused over. I'll wait and look at it again tomorrow.

If you use &mdash, add the semicolon. And otherwise I don't know what the not displaying properly has to do with a skin. This should happen in other skins too.

In the classic "skin", &mdash shows up as a real emdash (long dash). Don't know what/where/why makes it appear as a hollow box with the Pattern Skin (TWiki's new look).

A Google search on [emdash "hollow box"] turns up this (various PuTTY/groff/man/less bugs, which doesn't immediately (on a quick scan) sound relevant, but might be. (I.e., maybe it's a character set issue?) (BTW, without rereading this page, I don't recall if it is a konqueror only problem (I may not have attempted to determine that).)
