A fairly interesting idea -- something that causes you to upload a file at the same time you are downloading it. The intent is to help more people download the same file without overloading the "root" server providing the file.

I have a few questions that I couldn't find answers to on the BitTorrent site:

  • Does it help anybody if I do this over a dial-up modem? (33.6 kbps at that)
  • Does doing this cut my download rate in half? Does the anser it depend on the type of connection? (Possibly yes for dial-up, no for DSL or Cable -- I have no basis for guessing that, except the thought that a dial-up connection is limited by the telephone wires (normally one pair -- thus I suspect half-duplex), while DSL or Cable might be full duplex (since I have no knowledge thereof).)
