UPDATE: Canon is not as perfect as I thought, see PolCanonBJC3000, particularly the discussion about the waste ink tank.

One of the most important criteria for me in selecting an ink jet printer is the ease and reliability of refilling the ink cartridges. On that basis, I almost always recommend Canon. However, as Canon has a variety of cartridges, you need to look at the cartridge in the printer under consideration and confirm that it still has the easy refilling features that I value so highly. See RefillingInkJetCartridges.

Clearly, there are things to consider when buying a printer besides the ease of refilling the cartridges, like resolution, quality, ... But, I believe, that you can identify printers that meet your criteria for resolution, quality, etc. in the lines of several different manufacturers -- at that point I'd make my decision on the likelihood of being able to successfully refill the cartridges.

Should I say it? Ink jet printer manufacturers operate on the Gillette razor marketing model -- they practically give away the printer, they make their money on the ink cartridges. Pick a printer with cartridges you can refill yourself to have at least half a chance in this battle.
