You can also use the advanced builder search techniques included as an additional link in many of the search engine.

When you first see these web pages, they look very intimidating to use. What you will see is a lot of "Search For" boxes with drop down menu selections. Although many of them seem to be different, the concept of using them is the same.

Instead of typing long complicated search criteria using boolean operators, most of the advanced builder search techniques will do this for you by letting you type in keywords and key phrases that you want to in "Search For" box, and keywords and key phrases that you wish to exclude in another "Search For" box. Most of these advanced builder search techniques are explained on each web page. Then you also get a chance to select web pages only in English, and select the number of results you wish to be displayed on one page.

You will see the word query used on some advanced builder search techniques sites. This is just another word for building the search criteria in the "Search For" boxes to select the information you want.

There are some rules when using the advanced builder search techniques .

  • Omit punctuation in the "Search For" boxes.

  • Do Not type the Boolean operators - AND, OR, NOT in the "Search for" boxes.

  • Leave a space between search terms within the "Search for" boxes.

  • You can use wildcard characters such as the * or the ? in the "Search For" boxes.

  • Do not hit your "enter key" as this does not begin your search, hit the "submit button" at the bottom of the page.

  • Click on the "Reset" button to clear the "Search For" boxes.

A good way to begin to use these advanced builder search techniques with the "Search For" boxes, is to type in your keywords, or key phrases and use one of the Boolean operators on the Search Engine's home page, and then click on the "Advance Search" link. Most likely the search engine will have the "Search For" boxes filled in with the same keywords and key phrases used on the home page, but without the Boolean operators or punctuation. You then can build on your "Search For" boxes to refine your search even more.

Again - each of you will find that you enjoy searching the Internet by preferring to use a particular search engine and certain search techniques over other ones.
