Okay, you now have an idea what a search engine is and what it does. Just how many of these search engines are we talking about?

First of all, let me clarify again, that we are referring to search engines that do top level searches. Of course I had to use a search engine to locate a web site that would give me some kind of idea of the number of search engines available worldwide. As usual, the search engine came up with a web site that has this information.

And the number is - as of 9/14/02 - there are reported to be 834 main search engine programs in the United States, and 2,472 worldwide. You can check current numbers by going to this web site - http://www.twics.com/~takakuwa/search/search.html.
