Before we actually discuss ways to download , you need to set up a folder to receive your downloads. Easiest place to find something on your computer is your desktop. So right click on your "desktop", left click on "new", left click on "folder", and name this new folder - "My Download Folder". Now you are ready to discover the different ways to download from the Internet.

The way to download a program is:

  1. Go to a download site, such as http://download.cnet.com.
  2. Find a file to download.
  3. Check to see if program is compatible with your operating system.
  4. Check to make sure you have enough resources, such as ram, hard disk space.
  5. Check to see if file is free, or free for so many days, or if there is a cost.
  6. Click on the program hyperlink to download the file.
  7. Most hyperlinks take you to a more detailed screen, print screen.
  8. Find button that says "Download Now".
  9. A File Download window may appear, saying some files can harm your computer... This depends on your browser Internet security settings. If you are downloading this file from a trusted download site, it is ok to save it to your system, especially if you have an updated virus protected running. Click on the "save" button.
  10. Another File Download window appears. Make sure the "save in" white area at top of window shows the folder name you created on your desktop - (my download files). If this doesn't display your folder name, click on the drop down arrow, and find the folder.
  11. Within the same window, towards the bottom you will see "file name", and the default program name showing in the white area next to "file name". You can rename the file so that when you see it on your computer, you will know what it is. Also take notice of what type of file it is but do not change this. This will be the second white area at the bottom of the screen.
  12. Now click on the "save" button, and you will see the file go from the Internet to your system. If by chance you did not save it to where you thought you saved it, you can always use the "Find" or "Search" command from your "Start" button find it.
  13. Now you can double click on the downloaded program to install it. If there is any problem with your system after you install a new program, you can uninstall it by going to the control panel to uninstall programs.

Note: If for some reason you click on the "open" command instead of the "save" command in the download window, the file still downloads. It gets saved to a temp file with a temp name in the Internet Temporary History Files folder. When it has finished downloading, the file opens right away. The disadvantage is that you don't know the name of the file because you didn't get the option to name it. This makes the file hard to find if you want to access it later.

You can also use the following way to download a program, sound files, cursor files, text files, and video files, (which are identified by the three digit extension).

  1. Right click on top of a hyperlink within a web page. If the file extension is not another hyperlink (.html) and matches one of the extensions listed on the file format page, you can choose the way to download the file depending on your browser. Remember that you can do this only if the web site gives you permission to do so.
  2. If you are using Internet Explorer, choose "save target as".
  3. If you are using Netscape, choose "save link as".
  4. A "save as" window appears similar to above. Make sure "save in" is also set to your folder name "my download files".
  5. You can rename file in the "file name" text area.
  6. Click on the "save" button.

The way to download image files, is to find an image on a website keeping in mind that you have to have permission from the website to do this legally.

  1. Right click on top of the image.
  2. If using Internet Explorer, choose "save picture as".
  3. If using Netscape, choose "save image as".
  4. A "save as" window appears similar to above. Make sure "save in" is also set to your folder name "my download files".
  5. You can rename file in the "file name" text area.
  6. Click on the "save" button.
