One of the main concerns you may have, is to shop safely on the Internet. Let's face it. Instead of a couple of shopping malls in your immediate area, you have unlimited places to shop online. Let's discuss some of the ways you can shop safely on the Internet.

  • Never enter any personal information on a form on the Internet, if the website is not a secure website. You tell this by the URL address appearing in your address bar at the top of your browser. If the website does not start with "https" instead of "http", the website is not a secure website. If the URL starts with "https", this means your personal information will be encrypted and turned into a bunch of illogical symbols. You will also see a little padlock symbol at the bottom of the web site screen. This is one of the main ways you can shop safely on the Internet.

  • Use a charge card that with a small limit amount, and only use that charge card for online purchases. If by chance, someone does get to your personal information, there will be only a limited amount of trouble that person can do.

  • Shop at the well known stores web sites. Most major companies now have a web site that offers more choices and have more items in stock than individual stores located around you. Also make sure you check the refund or exchange policy located somewhere on the store's web site before entering an order, and check the shipping charges as well. Most items will arrive within a few days. This is another way to shop safely on the Internet.

  • Keep all your passwords very private and not something common like the last four digits of your social security or mother's maiden name. A professional could find out that type of personal information about you easily enough. Keep very good records and print out all purchase confirmations whenever possible in case there may be a problem. Yet another way to shop safely online.

  • Always read the company's privacy statement about sharing your information, including paying your monthly bills online. Many times you are given a choice on how your personal information is used. Always say no, to having personal information, such as your email address, used for marketing purposes or shared with other companies. Look for this choice as part of the company's privacy policy. Also you may want to consider to use a special e-mail address strictly for shopping online.

If you follow these guidelines and use a little caution and common sense, Christmas shopping can almost be fun as you shop safely online.
