WHEN DO SEARCH ENGINES FAIL?

What do you mean that search engines fail? They seem to work okay when I use them, is what you are probably thinking right now.

Search Engines do have a down side. Listed below are several things you should keep in the back of your mind when using search engines.

  • Sometimes the "keyword" or the "keyword phrase" you enter in a search engine does not bring any results, based on the functionality of a search engine. There are times you may have to find newsgroup listings. You may also find that you may have to use one of the database listings under the topic - "where can search engines not go?" Also, there may be more relevant links listed on one of the web pages, that will take you to other similar sites. These links may be more helpful than the search engine listings.

  • More and more search engines are asking fees to be listed under them. So depending, on when the fees were submitted for websites, is how search engines rank listings of web pages. Then search engines give you listings not in order of relevance to your subject, but by submission of websites. After about looking at 100 web sites or so, most people get tired and do something else.

  • Search Engines list pages that are no longer found or outdated. Many people create web pages on their ISP Server. When you change ISP's, your web page on that ISP's server is no longer valid. Many webmasters have to continually also resubmit web pages to search engines, to keep them higher in the listing.

  • Some search engines where lead you to web sites you do not want to be, as in pornographic sites, or even sites of other countries where you do not want to be. Search engines will also take you to pages written in other languages which you will not understand.

One thing I cannot stress enough when using these search engines. Remember web pages are easily created and anyone can create them. By using some common sense when "surfing" and by using some of the basis search engine techniques we will be discussing, you can improve your experience with using search engines.
