WHO CONNECTS YOU TO THE INTERNET?

An ISP (Internet Service Provider) connects you to the Internet. They supply you with an account and the connection information needed to gain access to the internet.

Here are ways you can connect to the Internet as well as some of the questions you should be asking when choosing your ISP.

CABLE

  • Is there a setup or activation fee?
  • Is free web space provided? And if so, how much?
  • Is their service agreement month to month/quarterly/annually?
  • What savings are offered for prepay terms?
  • What are their usage policies?
  • Do they provide backup dialup service in case of an outage?
  • Are there any service guarantees?
  • What are system requirements?

DIALUP

  • Is their modem line a local call from your exchange?
  • How many local access points?
  • For your monthly fee, do you get unlimited usage?
  • Is there a setup or activation fee?
  • What type of connection do they have to the Internet?
  • Do they provide software to make the connection?
  • Is free web space provided? And if so, how much?
  • Is their service agreement month to month/quarterly/annually?
  • What savings are offered for prepay terms?
  • What are their usage policies?
  • Are there any service guarantees?

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

  • What is your distance from the nearest Central Office?
  • What happens if the installation is unsuccessful?
  • Is there a setup or activation fee?
  • Is free web space provided? And if so, how much?
  • Is their service agreement month to month/quarterly/annually?
  • What savings are offered for prepay terms?
  • What are their usage policies?
  • Do they provide backup dialup service in case of an outage?
  • Are there any service guarantees?

SATELLITE

  • What happens if the installation is unsuccessful?
  • Is there a setup or activation fee?
  • Is free web space provided? And if so, how much?
  • Is their service agreement month to month/quarterly/annually?
  • What savings are offered for prepay terms?
  • What are their usage policies?
  • Do they provide backup dialup service in case of an outage?
