Some recent Linux Distributions are compiled to require a Pentium (586) or better. Some Distributions still are compiled to work on 486s and maybe 386s. Compiled distributions that require a given processor might be recompiled (by you) to work with a lesser processor.

Notes

Read the Table in Order

See the entry for "Mandrake 7.2 and below" under the heading "Distributions Compiled for 486s" -- note that the entry is not repeated under "Distributions Compiled for 586s", even though a distribution compiled for a 486 will work on a 586.

Most of this Information is Second Hand

Distributions Compiled for 386s

Note: If I needed one, I'd look into the various "single disk" distributions (single disk firewalls and things like that).

  • Mandrake 5.3 and below (needs 32 MB Ram) (there was a version of 7.0 -- needs 64 MB Ram)
