After setting up Mandrake 9.1 on system12, I am disappointed with the fonts (again), in particular the fonts for nedit.

This page will record how I fix the fonts (assuming I do) (and I may cover more than just nedit).

Reminder: Fonts must be set under Preferences -> Default Settings -> Text Fonts and then Preferences -> Save Defaults must be issued to make the changes permanent.

Also, when setting fonts, use the little trick of Fill Highlight Fonts from Primary

(Partial) Resolution

I finally realized that I was not handling the Font Selector dialog properly (Preferences -> Default Settings -> Text Fonts -> Browse) — you (I) have to make a selection in all three columns (Font, Style, Size) before the preview will show a font. Once I realized this (again??), I was able to choose some fonts which look reasonable, even without installing the MS TTF fonts. Here are my settings (copied and pasted, so there is no question about the correct number of dashes). After I selected the base (primary) font, I accepted it, and on the previous screen chose: Fill Highlight Fonts from Primary:

  • -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--18-180-75-75-m-110-iso8859-1
  • -adobe-courier-medium-o-normal--18-180-75-75-m-110-iso8859-1
  • -adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18-180-75-75-m-110-iso8859-1
  • -adobe-courier-bold-o-normal--18-180-75-75-m-110-iso8859-1

Font Settings on System5

The font settings on system5, (where the fonts look decent, except perhaps small) (darn, I can't copy and paste them, so reading and typing — I'm worried especially about getting the dashes right (some look double, could they be triple?)) (in this order: normal, italic, bold, bold italic)

  • -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--17-120-100-100-n-100-iso8859-1
  • -adobe-courier-medium-o-normal--17-120-100-100-n-100-iso8859-1
  • -adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--17-120-100-100-n-100-iso8859-1
  • -adobe-courier-bold-o-normal--17-120-100-100-n-100-iso8859-1

These same settings on system12 don't produce the same fonts, presumably because either the right fonts aren't on system12, or they aren't in the fight place. (In fact, currently, these settings on system5 produce a non-monospaced font.)

I'm trying to move the (free) Microsoft TTF fonts to system12 — wanted to avoid having to download them from the Internet again (partly because I forgot where they are, and partly because the instructions look longer than I want to fool with). In trying to move them from another machine, I keep running into networking roadblocks (in fish, samba, nfs, or whatever).

Font Settings on System8

The font settings on system8, (where the fonts look decent, except perhaps small) (again, not copied and pasted) (in this order: normal, italic, bold, bold italic)

  • -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-*
  • -adobe-courier-medium-o-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-*
  • -adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-*
  • -adobe-courier-bold-o-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-*

The fact that these look decent with different settings reinforces my hope that simply getting the TTF fonts to system12 will help significantly.

Hmm, at the bottom of the font selector on this system (Mandrake 7.2) there is:

  • a preview of the font
  • the name of the font in a widget that I can copy from

The font name here is shown as:

  • -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-m-90-iso8859-1
