Starting some lists of programming tools and similar for open source -- (boy I feel like I wrote a page like this recently, but haven't found it today with search -- will look one more time -- I give up -- tried searching on "open source").

See AboutThesePages.

IDE = Integrated Development Environment -- often based on a programmers editor but with easy ways to invoke and use tools like a compiler, debugger, a versioning archive (CVS, RCS, Microsoft SourceSafe).

Aside: I could consider including Microsoft tools (like VC++) on this list, because, for example, the GPL'd program AbiWord is cross platform, and can be compiled using VC++ (for Win32). (BTW, this does not impose any obligation on Microsoft to release VC++ source code or any of the other things required of GPL software.)

Free or Open Source

  • kdevelop (IIRC) -- the kde IDE

  • Komodo -- $0 to $495 depending on something, from the website:
Komodo is a high-productivity, integrated development environment (IDE) for open source technologies and XSLT programming, available for Linux and Windows. It is optimized for programming languages including Perl, PHP, Python, and Tcl, and also features cutting-edge XSLT editing and debugging capabilities.

Komodo 1.2 delivers the features of a professional IDE within a highly intuitive environment, making it the right tool for professional and occasional programmers at any level.
