Setuid is a way to deal with some of the security restrictions in Linux, ideally in a secure way. I think that one use is to temporarily give a user (or a program??) root privileges (or maybe, more generally, privileges of a different user).

Anyway, I've found it a little confusing (not based on reading documentation specifically on setuid, but based on reading suggestions for the use of setuid on newsgroups and mail lists). Anyway, I've finally found proof that setuid and some other things are indeed confusing -- see the first link under #Recommended_for_Specific_Needs, below.

  • (rhk) Setuid Demystified; Hao Chen, et. al.; viewed 18 Jul 2002 -- A 20 page "academic" paper (in two column pdf format -- who wants to scroll up and down to read that on a computer). Anyway, 20 pages of pdf is proof that some things in Linux are confusing! (With only half a grin.)
