See also Suid where I mention starting this effort -- after starting a Google search on [shutdown "not root" Linux] I decided that accumulating some notes specifically on this topic may be worthwhile.

See AboutThesePages.

See Suid -- in the shutdown.scr file I created, try changing "/sbin/shutdown" to "/usr/bin/shutdown".

With respect to logging in as root via telnet, try logging in as an ordinary user and then su'ing to root.

Use visudo to add users to the sudo file (from http://www.ils.unc.edu/inls183/notes/Sep9/installation.html)

Try: "sudo shutdown -r now" (from http://fossil.wpi.edu/docs/howto_build_kernel.html)

See ResourceRecommendations. Feel free to add additional resources to these lists, but please follow the guidelines on ResourceRecommendations including ResourceRecommendations#Guidelines_for_Rating_Resources.

   shutdown from not root
   chmod u+s /sbin/shutdown
   then shutdown command
