See BLT.

upgrade: The process of improving the operation of a computer by installing new and improved hardware and software. Rpm and apt-get are some Linux tools that aid in the software upgrading process.

Note that, for example, an rpm can be used to install, upgrade, freshen, or ??? a program, each word implying slightly different actions (which should be discussed at least a little, somewhere). Never upgrade the kernel -- install a new kernel and maintain the old one so you can switch back if you run into problems.
