wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator): (But, I think it is!) Wine is intended to allow Windows applications to run on Linux. It is not perfected yet, some applications do work. See also Win4Lin, VMLinux, and ??

Wine is not an emulator smile but a set of libaries that prepare (and translate) the system functions that windows programs might call in a linux environment. An emulator start at scratch by building a new virtual machine where the operating system environment is started before a program can be run.

When working wine sure is a much better way to run a windows program in a linux environment though you could start argueing why it should ever be a good idea to run a windows program. I never got it working yet but that might be up to me.
