xmms is a program to play audio cds -- both standard / commercial (i.e., .wav files) and mp3s, IIUC.

It can display cd titles from the CDDB database (no longer free -- so use freedb.org, as below):

Preferences -> Audio I/O Plugins tab -> CD Reader Configuration

server: freedb.org
port:888
cgi path: /~cddb/cddb.cgi

Or, from Derek Jennings (Re: [newbie] CDDB access from XMMS?; 22 Jul 2002)

Right click on xmms Options>Preferences

There is a choice of two CD player plugins:

  • Cd Audio Player (for use with an analogue cable)
  • Audio CD Reader (for digital playing through IDE

You need the xmms-cdresd plugin.

Whichever plugin is enabled just highlight it and select 'Configure'.
