famastHi. What is the best way to have twiki redirect to /bin/view instead of the "readme, license, configure etc" page that you see when you first setup? [19:53]
mofinowith a index file containing a redirect or a webserver redirect [19:54]
famastso just something in the apache conf? [19:54]
mofinoi told you what the something was :) [19:55]
famastso just a "webserver redirect in the apache conf" [19:56]
mofinoyou dont need to second guess what your reading [19:57]
famastwhat if i'm using IIS? (i'm not, just a whatif situation). Then the solution would be an index file? What would this index file look like? [19:57]
mofinomost if not all webservers support some form of redirection [19:58]
famastthis is a common usecase yes? Why not put it in the installation docs? [20:00]
mofinofeel free to make a suggestion
besides, why can't the author expect some level of knowledge from the user?
[20:01]
famastCertainly the author can. Obviously you wouldn't want to have to discuss how to turn your computer on.....
but working with apache is not my dayjob. Or night job. So its not something I want to deal with more then I have too.
[20:04]
mofinoi gave you two solutions... [20:06]
famastand i'm still trying to look up redirect
do I need mod alias
[20:07]
mofinothat's one solution
what is the other?
[20:07]
famastthe index [20:07]
mofinowhy not do that?
it's infinitely easier
[20:07]
famastso the contents of this index [20:09]
mofinogoogle is your friend [20:09]
famastare we talking something involving perl [20:09]
mofinoholy christ
HTML
i apologize, i guess i expect people to know certain things in advance
[20:09]
famastno no
thats fine
i can handle an HTML redirect
thanks
[20:10]
mofinono problem [20:10]
.... (idle for 15mn)
famastok incase this is being recorded for later searching. Another solution is add the DirectoryIndex to your conf underneath your VirtualHost.... something like DirectoryIndex bin/view
mofino: The reason I dont like html redirect (and therefore the reason I was asking you to elaborate, incase you had a different solution not involving html) is that its messy.. I dont like sending redirects to browsers
[20:25]
mofino?
that's how it done
putting it HTML incurs a "speedbump" for lack of a better word
since the redirect is coming in after the content
but ultimately it's the same thing, one is slightly faster than the other
but very very maginally
man, can't spell
[20:28]
famastyea but I dont want the browser to request, receive a 3xx code, and then have to follow through with it. Not at least for the main home page. (For pages that actually have moved and someone bookmarked yes) [20:32]
mofinowell i can't help you
you are asking for the impossible
[20:34]
famasthuh? why? I just gave the answer. And you did too, the 2nd option [20:34]
mofinowhat answer? [20:35]
famastchange the conf
do a mod rewrite
[20:35]
mofinoand what does that change?
do you even know what it does?
[20:35]
famastdepends on what options you use [20:35]
mofinohaha
this is futile
dont ask for help if you have "
"better" ideas about the situation
i suggest you learn what happens during an HTTP request
[20:35]
famastI'm not asking for help anymore. I needed help (honestly I did).
I just found another solution and wanted to put it out there
[20:36]
mofinowhat solution??
you can issue a redirect in two ways, by header or by content-header
[20:36]
famastDirectoryIndex bin/view in your conf [20:37]
mofinothat will work, but i personally wouldn't do that [20:38]
famastwhy not? [20:38]
mofinoi tend to keep things explicit [20:38]
famastDirectoryIndex /var/www/twiki/bin/view? :P [20:38]
mofinosame thing [20:38]
famasti'm joking
what is implicit about this
[20:38]
mofinono redirect
redirects are extremely common
leave off the / on any URL and it'll fill it in (pending it's a directory)
it being the webserver
[20:39]
famasti'm not convinced the / is a redirect, and using live headers on something like twiki.org is not showing any 3xx. Like I said i don't have a problem with redirects. If you want to redirect http to https or http:// to http://www fine. Or for pages that moved, fine. But for a home page? It just seems odd. If anything you could argue that index.html is common, so its easier for an admin/dev to quickly associate your root page with index.ht
err /bin/view
or whatever it is
[20:50]
mofinosec
sorry, it's not on the root of a domain, it's implied there
it's only on directories
and i agree that specifying a redirect is much clearer
i think you nailed it right there
http://twiki.org/cgi-bin should redirect
[20:53]
famastforbidden [20:57]
mofinoyes
but did you see the redirect?
[20:57]
famasti'm using live headers and its only showing a 403 [20:59]
mofinoso am i
and it shows both
[20:59]
famastOH yea I see
i refreshed and the / was on there
[21:00]
mofinoahh yeah [21:00]
famastinteresting. So maybe the browser adds it if it is just the domain (http://www.google.com)
alright well can't ponder about this all day. thanks again for the help
[21:05]
mofinoyeah i think so
hehe ok, take care
