Question
Hi friends,
I have installed twiki on linux (redhat 7.1) and trying to access through windows NT Workstation. First thing I observed is Registration form on this site and the one at my intranet are different. Intranet one does not have password. I want to set authentication. So that I can keep track who changed what. I renamed the .htaccess.txt to .htaccess. And when I am trying to edit something, Its asking for user name and password! Good sign but not taking empty passwords. As I never gave passwords to the user id at my intranet, how shall I continue with? I created a new account and tried give unix user ids as intranet login id and then try with unix password. Humm... it still did not work. Can any body help!
- TWiki version:
- Web server: Apache
- Server OS: Linux Red-Hat 7.1
- Web browser: IE
- Client OS: NT Workstation

Answer
You did not specify if you want TWiki to keep track of usernames and passwords or if you want to use existing accounts on your Intranet.
Assuming the latter case: See
UsingOtherPasswords
Assuming the former case: Follow the instructions in
TWiki.TWikiInstallationGuide, Enabling Authentication of Users. Do some test registrations until you know that new user registration works as expected. Then you need to assign passwords to your existing registered users. You could simply remove the user home pages and ask them to register again. Or you could generate default passwords for all by running the htpasswd utility from the Unix shell, e.g.
htpasswd /path/to/twiki/data/.htpasswd JohnSmith. Then ask the users to change their password in
TWiki.TWikiUserAuthentication

Thanks for the reply..
I want twiki to maintain the usernames and passwords. I have a problem while following the instructions in
TWiki.TWikiInstallationGuide, Enabling Authentication of Users. At step 1, I did "Rename file .htaccess.txt in the twiki/bin directory to .htaccess"
Please explain step 2. "Copy the
TWiki.TWikiRegistrationPub topic to
TWiki.TWikiRegistration. Do that by either editing the topics in theTWiki web, or by renaming the .txt and .txt,v files in the twiki/data/TWiki directory"
Thank you

"edit the topics in twiki web" means:
- Edit TWikiRegistrationPub
- Select all text, copy to clipboard
- Edit TWikiRegistration
- Select all text, delete it
- Paste clipboard content
- Save changes
In addition you can remove TWikiRegistrationPub

Yap, thanks! I have done "edit the topics in twiki web". As I am going for registration, its asking password and all. Once I register with a test user, I observed that twiki/data/.htpasswd file is added the user name and some junk characters (probably password).
But when I am trying to login with the user[when I go to Edit hyper link, I am asked my username and password] , my login attempts are failed. I changed password with htpasswd utility and also from
UserAuthentication page. But failed to login. what could be the reason?
I have deployed on Red hat 7.1 and on apache 1.3.x.
