Question

I have a topic that is linked to all over my site, but I have discovered that it is no longer needed, as the WebHome page for it covers all I needed it for. What is the best way to remove this page and update all the links to it to point to WebHome instead? I tried renaming it to WebHome, but it wouldn't let me.

Thanks.

Answer

I had to do this once or twice and proceeded like this:

If you wanted to keep the original WebHome (which I think your question implied) then you can follow the last step above with:

  • Rename WebHome to the Trash Web
  • Rename WebHomeOld to WebHome

This is slightly involved but a lot less work than changing many references by hand. It does make me think that rename could be improved so that you can change the link, without actually moving the topic, or perhaps nominate trash for the topic and say where links should point to.

Just to be clear, to put all this together you would:

  1. Rename old WebHome to WebHomeOld (do not update all links to it)
  2. Rename SomeHotTopic to WebHome (with link updates)
  3. Rename WebHome (which used to be SomeHotTopic) to the Trash Web (no link updates)
  4. Rename WebHomeOld to WebHome
