SID-00323: Getting em-dashes and italics to display in search results

I'm wondering if it's possible to have characters such as em/en-dashes and italics display in formatted search results. We have tried using the typographyplugin, but since we use primarily IE we ran into the problem where the HTML comments are disabled. We have set-up the results in a table format and text that is formatted in italics in topic entries is displaying as plain text in the search results. I thought it might be possible to control this through forms, but I don't know how to go about this.

Any suggestions?
