• Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) created room for about 4 billion Web Sites.

• During the Gulf War, the Internet's ability to defend itself was proved in a strange way - Iraq's own Internet helped Iraq's military command network withstand attack from US bombs.

• Soviet Union, paralyzed by a new blackout during the coup against Gorbachev, got the truth out to the world by Internet transmissions.

• There were now 700,000 hosts/nodes on the internet.
