Suggestion for refactoring content: move the 'Translation in Templates'-Part in GermanTranslationSettings to s.th. like TranslationViaVariables. Maybe move this topic to GermanTranslationSettings afterwards.
I am about to do some translating to German. That's as far as the introductory articles (topics) are concerned:
20-minute-TWiki and
markup, I think. This would meet an important requirement the discussions on
I18N and
L10N are missing: translated content.
- GerTranWelcomeGuest
- GerTranAnnounceAndMission - complete, needs revision
- GerTranTWikiTutorial - complete, needs revision
- GerTranWikiSyntax - complete, needs revision, included by GerTranTWikiShorthand - complete, needs revision
- GerTranWikiWord - complete, needs revision
- GerTranTextFormattingRules - that one is long and clumsy with all the HTML.
- I took the liberty to post the translation I've done for our project (Regeln zur Textformatierung oder Wiki-Syntax). Some pagenames/links will have to be adjusted.-- ChristianKohl - 07 Jan 2004
- Thanks a lot! Personally, I like your seperated layout better than the one-piece-table of TextFormattingRules. Let's see what our department's wikiusers say (next week) -- PatrickHansmeier - 08 Jan 2004
- I changed the layout because of the negative user feedback I got for the original version. Since our wiki is for non-technical users usability issues are really important and I felt I had to restructure the whole Help-System a bit. This is why there's so little 1:1 translation of topics. -- ChristianKohl - 09 Jan 2004
Anyone looking for suggestions on a translation of the TWiki-internal snippets, should have a look at
GermanTranslationSettings.

Hi Patrick - glad to see you are working on a translation, which will be a great input into
L10N work.
I noticed your translation uses the 'ue' form of constructions instead of 'ü' - since TWiki supports the latter, and by default runs in ISO-8859-1 which supports accented characters, I was wondering if there was some other reason why you are using the 'ue' form?
--
RichardDonkin - 04 Dec 2003
The reason for me to use 'ue' is that I am using an US/EN-keyboard most of the time. As soon as the texts are finished I'll clean up the umlauts.
--
PatrickHansmeier - 04 Dec 2003
The current
TWikiBetaRelease has better support for umlauts in
WikiWords - by supporting UTF-8 in URLs (
EncodeURLsWithUTF8), there's now no need to configure browsers to use TWiki
I18N URLs. See
HowToDealWithGermanUmlaute for a request for this feature from a German TWiki user.

Patrick, I just added some of my German translations and commented on some of yours. Please let me know if that's what you had in mind or whether you'd prefer a different "workflow".

I am also working on a German translation of TWiki. The current version can be downloaded at
www.q-ag.de/~fengh

HuiweiFeng - 26 Jan 2004
Huiwei, good to see you are also working on this. To avoid duplication, it would be good if you could contribute your changes into the existing pages here on TWiki.org. I had a quick look at your download file and your work on templates is interesting - this would require some significant changes if we are to keep the templates easily maintained, see
TWikiInSpanish for some details on how this might be done.

RichardDonkin - 04 Feb 2004
Hi,Richard! Thank you for your suggestion;-) But I do not understand what are you meaning about "contribute your changes into the existing pages here on TWiki.org"? Thank you very much.
--
HuiweiFeng - 19 Feb 2004
Hi - I meant that you could review the various pages in the bulleted list near top of this page (starting at
GerTranAnnounceAndMission) and compare the translations there with yours, adding comments, updates or new translated material as appropriate - i.e. merging your translation work into the current work, which has had the input of two people so far. The idea is to just have one group of people working on one translation, avoiding duplicated work.

Hi, this is the current version of my German translation
TWiki20030201-de20040219.tar.bz2 (100% temlates 80% data) . Please let me know, what are you thinking about it.
--
HuiweiFeng -- 20 Feb 2004
Hi, I am unsure whether this is the right place, but I use the Cairo release and cannot find the german translation
for it. This seems to be the translation for an older release of TWiki.
I cannot find any new translations - maybe there is a link missing here, or I just don't see it.

Hi! I was wondering... are the GermanTranslation efforts dead or is somebody still interested in translation of TWiki?
I will have to localize a few wiki pages (page formatting) for a current project. It would be nice to coordinate efforts so that localized pages get into the upstream version. Anyone interested?
--
PeterLohmann - 10 Jan 2006
Hi Peter, i'm very interested! I will established the Twiki in my Department in the next months and i'm to be confronted with the problem, that e.g. the User Help Pages exclusivly written in english. that is a big problem for the user ....

while the user are working in the IT-Department and the IT is mostly in german

...
Nevertheless .... Let me know, how can i help?!

I would be willing to offer some translation-ressources. Who can explain them what to do? Which are the wiki-documents to read? --
