InterWiki is a concept common to many
WikiClones, used to simplify links from one Wiki to another: by writing
WikiName:WikiPage, you create a link to a remote Wiki site, without having to remember the URL format, e.g.
Wiki:WelcomeVisitors
is on the original Wiki, and
ASTWiki:Main/WebHome
is
AndreaSterbini's TWiki site. This feature has also been used to link to non-Wiki sites, e.g.
RFC:1234
links to an Internet RFC.
TWiki implements this through a plugin,
Plugins.InterwikiPlugin. On TWiki.org, this uses the
TWiki.InterSiteLinkRules page, which has a list of
InterWikis site names and URLs; the same rules page is called
TWiki.InterWikis in 'out of the box' TWiki sites (for compatibility with other
WikiClones).
I created this page because InterWiki is how users of other Wikis would expect this to be spelt, making this an easier target for remote Wiki links to TWiki, and to simplify linking to the InterWiki concept from within TWiki's Codev web.

There is now a project called
InterWikiSoftware,
a group of software projects to develop tools to allow more interaction between wikis" (
http://interwiki.sourceforge.net/
).
As of November 2003 the only significant piece of code abailable appears to be
WikiGateway,
a library of functions which allows you to act as a client to a wiki website, executing operations like getPage, putPage, and getRecentChanges.
