Proposal: Redesigned Download Page, Sep 2009

In HelsinkiReleaseMeeting2009x08x17, MilindPansare proposed a redesigned download page with these objectives:

  1. We should, as the twiki.org community, have a much better picture of who's downloading and using twiki ?
  2. We should continue to safeguard privacy for those who do not wish to be identified
  3. We should have a relatively frictionless download of the community developed twiki
  4. We need to also balance in when users should use the certified twiki subscription from twiki.net versus the community free version

PeterThoeny gave this input: From company perspective we'd like to ask community to get some more prominent coverage on the download page, to make it easier for commercially minded people to find twiki.net products. In return, more business for twiki.net means more support for the community, e.g. the company is able to contribute more back and to sponsor consultants to work on new features and bug fixes.

Here is a draft of the redesigned download page, heavily inspired by the MySQL download page: (The draft is enclosed by a black border for illustration purposes only)

Please provide feedback on this proposed redesign in time for the HelsinkiReleaseMeeting2009x09x14.

-- PeterThoeny - 2009-09-13

I will add two small diagrams that show the difference between community release and enterprise release from an architectural perspective. Something similar to slide 21 in TWikiPresentation2008x08x21. This was suggested by PeterJones after HelsinkiReleaseMeeting2009x08x17.

-- PeterThoeny - 2009-09-14

The hosting bubble should be all blue, not white. Why write that it's "Not available", when you have a list of hosting sites in this same topic.

-- SeanCMorgan - 2009-09-18

Good point Sean, I pointed our marketing person to the TWikiHostingSites page, and updated the table in the download page to reflect reality.

-- PeterThoeny - 2009-09-19

Ditto the support bubble: all white means no support, which ignores our efforts in the Support web.

I understand the desire to promote the "Enterprise Release". But please don't demote the "Community Release".

-- SeanCMorgan - 2009-09-21

Very good point, and thank you for raising this important issue. You, others and I are quite actively helping users in the support forum and on IRC. I fixed the download page to reflect that, and I will bring this to the attention of our marketing department. Please accept my apologies for stepping over the line.
