Research Survey of Corporate Wiki Users -- Complete
ORIGINAL POST: CORPORATE WIKI USERS - THIS IS FOR YOU. WIN AN iPOD NANO!
If you are an active user/contributor to a company wiki, consider taking this survey by Nov 15th and have your name entered into a raffle for an iPod Nano
http://emarshall2.usc.edu/ultimatesurvey/takeSurvey.asp?surveyID=419
Take a moment and read these questions:
Have you thought about how your use of corporate wikis compare to other people using corporate wikis.
Have you wondered if other people contribute to their company's wiki for the same reasons you do.
Have you wondered why some people are comfortable editing others' stuff on wikis and others are not comfortable doing it.
Is there anything about your company's use of wikis that bothers you.
Have you ever been interested in contributing to research that is going to help identify lessons learned about how to enhance corporate use of wikis.
Do you have any interest in winning an iPod Nano.
If you answered any of these questions "yes", then consider taking this survey by November 15th and be entered into a drawing for a free iPod Nano. Why not give it a try.
This survey is being conducted by Dr. Ann Majchrzak, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California and Dr. Christian Wagner, City University of Hong Kong. We've been asked by the Society for Information Management's Advanced Practices Council, a professional society of Chief Information Officers in the U.S. to conduct a survey of active and contributing corporate wiki users. We will use your responses to identify lessons learned about how to enhance corporate use of wikis. By corporate wiki, we mean a wiki used in a company to further the goals of that organization. Such a wiki might be used for tasks including Research and Development, project management, helpdesk activities or knowledge sharing.
Thank you for your time.

Looking very much forward to the results, it's an interesting survey. One of the questions had me giggling a bit: - "How many pages are in your wiki: 1, 2-3, 4-7, 8-10, 11-15, 16-20, > 20 Pages?". Of course it only demonstrates in how many different ways wikis are deployed. (We are at 6k+ pages ourself).

Some interested results that you reported from your survey responses so far:
Ratio of the Number of Lurkers to Contributors, on the average, for the Corporate Wikis:
80 lurkers to 37 contributors, or just over 2 to 1.
Ratio of Respondents that contribute to corporate wikis because it greatly enhances their reputation in the company/field to those who see little reputation benefit: 15 to 49, or under 1 in 3 (Sorry, no fame in wiki use yet!)
Ratio of Respondents that contribute to corporate wikis because doing so is very helpful to them personally: 64 to 6, or almost 10 to 1 in favor of wiki use.
Ratio of Respondents who feel their organization has greatly benefited from having the corporate wiki: 39 to 18, or over 2 to 1 odds of visible, positive gain to the organization.
Of the responses received so far, over 70% of respondents post new topics, ideas, or comments to their corporate wikis but seldom engage in any 'restructuring' activities, such as major edits, rollbacks, refactoring, paragraph rewrite, or paragraph integration. Only 15% restructure the wiki sites.
Thank you for your help so far and stay tuned for further results!

Peter, let me provide the exact numbers, as readers may find them useful. Of 168 respondents respondents in our survey of corporate wiki users, 55 reported the use of TWiki, 33 the use of Mediawiki, 22 did not know, and the rest reported using other wikis (including
PmWiki, Socialtext, and Confluence, but none with frequency higher than 6). While we did not ask respondents for their company affiliation, we know from the responses that we captured a broad range, with >20% of respondents' companies having less than 100 employees and 19% more than 10,000 employees. You can find a copy of the presentation slides in the attachments.
