TWiki, a Flexible and Powerful Web-Based Collaboration Platform - New Version
LEAD:
TWiki is a collaboration platform that allows you to run a dynamic intranet site, a project development space, a document management system, a knowledge base, an issue tracking system and many other groupware application.
PRESS RELEASE:
San Jose, Tuesday, 10-Dec-2001: TWiki announces a new version of its popular collaboration platform. TWiki looks and feels like a normal intranet or Web site. In addition, an Edit link on every page allows users to freely change or create content. TWiki is installed on the Web server and can be operated from any Web browser, without requiring special browser plugins.
Major companies like Sun Microsystems, Motorola, Inktomi and Wind River depend on the TWiki platform to increase the productivity of their engineering teams.
Features include automatic link generation, full text search, authorization based on groups, Web form handling, email notification of changes, file attachments to Web pages, revision control of pages and attachments, and more. The server-side TWiki Plugins API provides developers with a simple way to build new groupware applications. Plugins available now include: Spreadsheet, calendar, TOC, and more. Get more details at
http://TWiki.org/
.
"The TWiki platform is designed to eliminate the 'one webmaster' syndrome, where input from many people hits a bottleneck when only one person is in charge of updates, and intranet content becomes outdated and inadequate," said Peter Thoeny, creator and lead developer of TWiki. "Empowering employees to make changes to the intranet, combined with a peer review of content, makes sure that content is up-to-date and accurate. Many major companies in the telecommunication and consumer product industries depend on TWiki to streamline the information flow between virtual teams and corporate offices."
TWiki Version 01-Dec-2001 is a minor release and includes a Formatted Search feature to create database like reports.
TWiki is available for download from the TWiki.org web-site.

| What's so special about this Wiki ? | Jean-Marc Liotier | Dec 11, 2001, 10:45:28 |
Make sure you also take a look at other Wikis : http://www.zwiki.org/ZWiki is a powerfull Zope based Wiki, http://twistedmatrix.com/users/jh.twistd/moin/moin.cgi/FrontPage is a Python WikiClone, and of course, the mother of all Wikis : http://c2.com/cgi/wiki Wikis are wonderfull tools. They are completely anarchic, and not everyone will like them : some will prefer bondage and discipline content management systems. But if you want to unleash the creativity of users on a scale you've never seen before, a Wiki is what you need. |

| While it is true that TWiki started it's life as a Wiki it is now much more then that. Most Wikis are targeting Internet communities, where TWiki is targeting the corporate world. Because of that you get additional functionality like organizing and controlling content (based on fine grained access control, audit trail, web forms, file attachments under revision control etc), and you can install/build customized web applications (based on variables, formatted search and Plugin API) |
