Information on current search engine optimization competitions

serps was chosen as the keyword for the original fun search engine optimisation competition, currently running in the Usenet newsgroup alt.internet.search-engines. The basic idea of the serps competition is to gain the highest Google placement for a given keyword, within a set time period.

There are no rules, no entry fees, no prizes and is open to all. The competition started of amongst a handful of the regulars at a.i.s-e but soon escalated. A simple google search for the keyword, provides an indication of the popularity of the competition, with over 90 percent of the top 100 pages returned now related to the competition. With the first serps competition set to end on the 16th April, there are already discussions in place, as to the target keyword for the next competition, and there is also a French version running in parallel, where the target keyphrase is mangeur de cigogne which roughly translates as eating the stork.

With a final entry date for the French Competition of April 16, it is suprising to see how few English competitors there are. As of the 7th of April, there only appears to be one English page appearing in the Google top 50. This is the mangeur de cigogne page of Sim64, it provides information about the competition in English, and encourages more English speaking webmasters to join in the fun.

This wiki page will provide information on the competitions, links to entry forms, information on target keywords and links to resources related to serps competitions. It will also provide answers to any questions related to the competitions and search engine optimization in general. Please post any questions after the horizontal line.

With the search engine optimization competitions becoming more widely known about it is interesting to note 2 further competitions have just begun, The nigritude ultramarine competition and the telendro competition. The telendro cometition originated in a Spanish forum, and is primarily being competed by Spanish webmasters and SEO's.

Telendro was chosen, because it is a made up word, there were no pages displayed when searching for it at the start of the competition (End of April) but today (7th May) there are over 42,000. This competition is planned to last for 5 months and has a token prize for the winner.

The "nigritude ultramarine" competition began this morning 7th May 09:00 gmt and is actually split into 2 competitions. the first goal is to have your page ranked highest in 1 month and the 2nd is to have the highest rank after 2 months. a prize of a mini i-pod is awarded for the first month, and a phillips 17" flat screen monitor is the prize after 2 months. The competition originated in an English speaking SEO forum, as I find out more I will post details.

With most of the competitions now over (there is still one in progress, but I have not entered) it was a shame I couldnt keep a track of progress here, but unfortunately a lot of people were abusing wikis by just spamming them with links. Instead I kept a running report of progress within internal pages of my own site, which actually turned out quite good, as it was a way of adding more content. I will eventually move it across to here, but not until the other competition is over. I dare say If anyone finds it before then , it will be abused and spammed :o( -- TerryS - 14 Nov 2004
