Is Net::SMTP installed and making configure happy? Have you tried the SMTP debug flag in configure (then check the webserver logs)

I thought Net:SMTP was installed by default w/ TwikiVmDebianStable so I am not sure otherwise. How can I tell? Haven't tried the debug flag. How do I enable that? Thanks for your help.

Probably asking a stupid question here - but is the VM able to lookup the exchangeserver.local in dns?

$ nslookup exchangeserver.local

If not you could choose to add the server to /etc/hosts or use the IP-address in configure instead.
