Question

I want to allow normal access to new webs I create, but make everything out-of-the-box r/o, so I thought I could just protect Main, but users are created there without being able to update themselves, I know I could go though Main page-by-page adding topic protection, but what I really want is either (a) for new user's pages to automatically be editable only by them, or, (b) for new user's pages to automatically be unrestricted, even if existing pages are protected in main...

Answer

Do you really need this kind of restriction? This goes against the WikiCulture. If you need that, you could change the register.tmpl template to include user's name for Set ALLOWTOPICCHANGE.
