Hi,
I'm installing 4.2.4 on web hosting site (NFSN -
FreeBsd OS, ssh access, no root access). Configure runs the first pass (necessary paths), and the site is ~visible.
But the second pass of configure fails with:
Software error:
syntax error at (eval 604) line 1, near "use TWiki::Configure::Checkers::Languages::."
For help, please send mail to the webmaster...
This happens ~30s after configure displays the env and CGI variables, and there's nothing else after. Environment variables and CGI setup seem OK; all required CPAN modules/versions are available.
I can't figure out where this error is even coming from, much less how to fix it. I'm not seeing anything written to any logs by configure.
appreciate any help in how to go about debugging!
thanks,
Kent

Discussion and Answer
Hmm, not sure. Check the Apache error log for any other clues.

Looks like I'm only getting a subset of the Apache error log. It has exactly the same message as the configure script error with slightly different formatting:
[Fri Jan 9 00:03:02 2009] configure: syntax error at (eval 604) line 1, near "use TWiki::Configure::Checkers::Languages::."
If I access an illegal page, then I get only one line: "Directory index forbidden by rule" -- nice and terse, no options for more verbose output.
Also verified that this has nothing to do with my browser; fails for IE, firefox, safari in exactly the same way.

I have no idea why it would do that. Your best bet is to remove/rename
twiki/lib/LocalSite.cfg and redo the configuration.

This may be a Mac issue. I originally unpacked, did initial edits and directory reorg's, and then created a new tar ball to copy to the server on a Mac. Mac created it's resource forks for everything in that archive -- and I suspect one or more of these interfered with other scripts.
I removed everything, redid all the unpack/edit/repack on Linux and had none of the same problems. I haven't gone back to prove/find specific file yet, so this is only a guess.
But the immediate problem is resolved.

Just had the same effect. Unpacked it under Mac, downloaded it to Linux and got this error. When unpacking it under Linux everything works fine!

Possibly a file ownership/permission issue? Make sure files are owned by webserver user.
