Well I'm having a terrible out-of-the-box experience with Twiki -- I can feel my heart racing, and I keep asking myself, "Why is this so hard?"
Enough whining: A friend, after an exhausting search, decided he wanted to use TWiki for a small group wiki, and set it up at a hosting provider. I'm thinking it would be a good idea to host it myself. I searched the TWiki web site on different modes for running TWiki, and was gratified to see that someone wrote a standalone mode, so I downloaded TWiki 4.2.4. Now, one command, and I have TWiki running, without messing around with any additional web server, right? OK, so this command line is...where? The commands are documented...where? I see on this support web someone asking questions about problems they have with a TWiki running standalone, but no indication is to where that person found the command. The command described in the Codev web by the original developer of standalone mode doesn't even exist in the 4.2.4 distribution.
One command, easily found -- that's all I ask.
Thanks for listening,
BillTrost

Discussion and Answer
The standalone version is not yet in production use. Please review the
AdminSkillsAssumptions. TWiki can be daunting to install if you are not familiar with Apache configuration. If inclined, consider a

Thanks for the answer (such as it is -- can I get to a version supporting standalone mode out of subversion?).
That's really unfortunate. By placing this dependency on Apache at the center of your work, you've created a great obstacle to anyone who wants to try out. People who don't have the permissions to install Apache, who work at sites already committed to some other web server, or people who just want to "take it for a spin" are going to hit that Apache requirement so prominently displayed on the system requirements and simply say, "Next!"

While I agree that it can be difficult to get Apache & TWiki up and running on Windows, it is much easier on Linux. Apache is fairly easy to install on Debian. But yes, a simple TWiki install that ships with a webserver to try out TWiki lowers the barrier to entry.

Still -- can I get the standalone version out of subversion? What revision would be appropriate?
