Hi,
I see that a topic has had its history completely reset a couple of weeks ago. The topic
was at r74, and somehow, r74 got reset to r1, losing all history.
In the log for this date, I see the following (look for repRev):
| 23 Jan 2009 - 17:49 | WilliamFoote | save | IMGWeb.WeeklyWillFoote | | 164.129.52.200 |
| 23 Jan 2009 - 17:49 | WilliamFoote | view | IMGWeb.WeeklyWillFoote | | 164.129.52.200 |
| 23 Jan 2009 - 17:50 | WilliamFoote | edit | IMGWeb.WeeklyWillFoote | | 164.129.52.200 |
| 23 Jan 2009 - 17:50 | MeryemSAHLA | view | IMGWeb.WeeklyIDRValidationFW | | 10.140.4.5 |
| 23 Jan 2009 - 17:50 | WilliamFoote | cmd | IMGWeb.WeeklyWillFoote | repRev 74 by william_foote 2009/01/23 17:50:19 | 164.129.52.200 |
| 23 Jan 2009 - 17:50 | WilliamFoote | save | IMGWeb.WeeklyWillFoote | minor | 164.129.52.200 |
And the tail of the ,v file says:
@
1.1
log
@@
text
@d1 1
a1 1</verbatim><sticky>%META:TOPICINFO{author="WilliamFoote" date="1232733019" format="1.1" reprev="1.74" version="1.74"}%
a37 1
@
</sticky>
The apache log at the same moment says:
164.129.52.200 - William Foote [23/Jan/2009:17:50:20 +0000] "POST /twiki/bin/save/IMGWeb/WeeklyWillFoote HTTP/1.1" 302 5 "http://cadweb.bri.st.com/twiki/bin/edit/IMGWeb/WeeklyWillFoote?nowysiwyg=1&t=1232732999" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)"

I am not sure what the cmd repRev really does here. Can anyone explain to me how all
RCS history has been lost? We rely a lot on the history being preserved, so I am really nervous about this.
Thanks for your help.

Discussion and Answer
This looks like a serious bug to me. This topic here is also at r74 (before my post). Could you please file a bug report (link in sidebar) and if possible add details on how to reproduce it?

Hmm, it was at r74 before my post. Now it is back at r2, and history looks like it is supposed to be.

I fixed the verbatim block of the ,v file example above. The verbatim block had a /verbatim as part of the text so it terminated the block prematurely. I replaced the verbatim block with a pre block and escaped the content.

FYI, TWiki slurps up meta data if copied into topic text. For example, if you past a META:TOPICINFO line into a TWiki page and save, it will take that one as the topic info, which will display an incorrect revision number. A subsequent edit/save cycle will restore it.
