SID-00135: Send mail on save

I would like to send an email when a particular topic is saved. I created a script that when you hit a button it saves the document and kicks out an email, this works fine when viewing a document. I moved the button html into an edit template to replace the existing save button. However, it does not work when in the edit template, it saves the document but does not kick out the email. Looking for thoughts on an alternative solution. Thanks for any input!
