I've just upgraded to 4.3.2
I have a number of formatted searches which include the $topic variable.
I now see that many are not defining the topic link automatically. I can force this by double brackets around the $topic variable, but when did this change?
Also it's not consistent. I have $web.$topic in one search which correctly defines a live link and in another case this is still "dead" text.
Under what conditions will the link be active or not?

Discussion and Answer
What was the TWiki version you upgraded from? Spec should be the same, not sure why latest version would behave differently. There is a NOAUTOLINK setting and <noautoling> tag that turns off auto-linking. Check your system-wide, web-level and page level settings.
There was one spec change where numbers between the first and second upper case sequence have been added to be valid
WikiWord patterns, such as
W3C. Since this links more aggressively than before you would see more links, not less. So your case is caused by something else.
(BTW, no need to invent cryptic WikiWords for the support question.)

I'd forgotten about NOAUTOLINK, but I always leave it blank. I've checked in TWiki Preferences (TWiki & Main) & in the Web preferences & it's empty everywhere.
Very odd.
Not a major problem, as the link can be forced with double brackets, I just don't understand why it's working the way it is.

Found it - a noautolink tag in an included topic, without a closing /noautolink
So it turned off the autolinking for the whol topic - and all those which included the offending topic
Mea Culpa

Glad it worked out.
