I've been wrestling with notifications for the past few days and got it working today (mainly issues with my MTA and errors in my cron).
But now, when my users receive their updates the subject comes as:
TWiki EW %MAKETEXT{"Web"} - Automated notification of topic changes
(for example)
I looked into the %MAKETEXT function but am not sure if I am missing a parameter. The only place I see this text is in the email subject line.
Thanks!

Discussion and Answer
Not sure. Did you modify
twiki/templates/mailnotify.tmpl? By default, it has this subject line:
Subject: %WIKITOOLNAME%.%WEB% - %MAKETEXT{"Automated notification of topic changes"}%
MAKETEXT is documented at
VarMAKETEXT.

I did not modify it --- but there is a slight difference, notice the <nop> prior to the %WEB% tag. Here is the subject from my mailnotify.tmpl.
Subject: %WIKITOOLNAME% <nop>%WEB% %MAKETEXT{"Web"} - %MAKETEXT{"Automated notification of topic changes"}%
Should I take out the <nop> ?

Simple fix: Add a
% at the end of MAKETEXT, e.g.
%MAKETEXT{"Web"}%.
I just checked, the TWiki-5.0.0 distribution has the proper content, but the latest
MailerContrib has this bug. I will update the mailer package.

The
MailerContrib package is now updated. This
TWikibug:Item6518
was not in the TWiki-5.0.0 release, only in the mailer package since 2010-06-12.

Added the "%" and got it working --- thanks for the help and for logging the defect. Jerry
