Question

I wrote a short table of courses and the books they require, along with their prices.

When I click on the column header for prices or author, the table goes awry. I've successfully copied the bug into this bug report. See the following table and then click on 'course', 'price' or 'author/title'. If the bug is present, some of the rows will have an extra column, some will be missing a column.

The answer is in the construction of the table. The top table is your original; The bottom table is the "fixed" table. The sort becomes confused when the number of rows are not the same as is the case with your example. Granted, the fixed table does not look as nice, but this is the answer on how to fix the table.
