Question
Any attachments which are zip or tgz files are repacked and molested so I cannot even find out how to unpack them again.
I can understand that people keep on complaining that files uploaded are wrong. But there is nothing wrong with the uploaded files.
It is TWiki that destroys them when you download using viewfile. And it is mainly on twiki.org that this happens.
Will the admins on twiki.org please disable all compression of anything served by viewfile?
Raised as support question to that others can see that it is a current problem.
The workround is to use the direct URL to the pub directory instead of clicking on the attachments in the table below.

ok - I added viewfile to TWiki.org's don't deflate
SetOutputFilter DEFLATE
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.(?:gif|jpe?g|png|zip|tgz)$ no-gzip dont-vary
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI viewfile no-gzip dont-vary
has that resolved it? (cos turning off deflation reduced the number of requests we serve by over 10%)

It resolved it 75%. Now I can download both zip and tgz with Firefox. And I can download the zip file with IE. But the tgz file still becomes garbage with IE when using the viewfile link. The direct pub link works on both IE and and FF for both tgz and zip.
