Question
We recently installed the latest TWiki 4.1.2 version (we used to be back on TWiki 3.x). All of our SEARCHes which used to display totals (i.e. "Number of topics: nn") now do NOT display these totals. The text line "Number of topics: nn" is entirely missing.
These are formatted searches (generally producing tables) which
do not use nototals="on", and which in TWiki 3.x DID display the totals. I've been looking through all the documentation, bug reports, help, etc., and NOTHING mentions this problem. I do not see any new preference variables controlling this default.
Example: On our system (and this one) the following search does not show Number of Topics (below):
|*Web*|*Topic*|
%SEARCH{ "." topic="%TOPIC%" nosearch="on" nosummary="on" format="| $web | $topic |" }%
Number of topics: 1
(Note the blank lines right after the table where a "Number of Topics"
would have been displayed!)
Does anyone have any idea what may be going on here? ....and how we can repair this?
(There is no plugin to even try and upgrade in this case.)
Thank you for any ideas you can offer!

Let's see. Here's a search for StevenElliot in this web:

I'm afraid you are going to have to be a bit more specific - for example, you could paste the actual SEARCH you are performing here (this site is running 4.1.2, I believe)

Thanks for your reply here. Glad you asked me to include the SEARCH, since interestingly enough, the same change in function shows up here. I went back to our old TWiki 3.x system (WIKIVERSION:
02 Sep 2004 $Rev: 1742 $) and verified that the same SEARCH above shows the total, but here in TWiki 4.1.2, it does not. If the function did indeed change (as it appears), is there a way we can force those SEARCHES to show the total??? (e.g.
total = "on" ???)
Thanks again!

does look suspicious, doesn't it?

OK, well, here's a FASCINATING new piece of information! .....
Apparently the "skin" plays a part in this.
Notice how the totals magically show up if you view this page using the "plain" skin:
https://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Support/WhySearchTotalsMissing?skin=plain
Anyone have any ideas on why a skin might or might not affect display of SEARCH totals???
Again, something must have changed in this area between TWiki 3 and TWiki 4.
Thanks again!

Known problem which should be fixed in 4.2.0 when we release that.
The issue was in the pattern skin and was resolved by a total rewrite of some javascript so we cannot pinpoint to a quick fix.
